EATING FOR THE FAMINE

OK.. I have 5 kids - no news there, but hello would someone please give word to them that I don't intend to go bankrupt just trying to feed them ?

Lord of the Rings folks .. I have been keeping track of the hoards of food they have consumed this week alone - and I swear they are eating like we are expecting some famine or something !

Here is an idea of what this is doing to me - um, besides driving me insane.

Ok, so far we have gone through a box of cereal a day, a loaf of bread a day, a gallon of kool-aid and 1/2 a gallon of milk a day. 1 jar of peanut butter and 1 Strawberry jam for the week, 2 HUGE packages of cheese, fruits and veggies too  ... and folks that is just breakfast and lunch usually. For dinner I have noticed that I have to make more things to even fill them. I had to make 3 boxes of Hamburger Helper one night and last night when we had chilli - I had to use 5 cans of everything ... spagetti - oh, there's another fun one - it has been taking 2 boxes and a big jar of sauce.

This is getting rediculous ... do they not realize that the food doesn't grow on trees... or um, ok - some does, but not the stuff I buy ----

Perhaps I should go buy a few cows, pigs and chickens ... I am serious ... they eat like they just got off the boat from Africa and have never seen food before in thier life time  - and yes - I do know that isn't all funny, but it is what they remind me of. I'm honest.

So - with the price of EVERY little piece of thing going up and up and up - my kids are going to cause me to be the very first person to actually file bankruptcy because of the food I have to buy !

:O)

  1. There are 7 of ya..so I do not doubt you go through a lot. Sometimes it seems like shit vanishes around here too quickly and there's only 3 of us. Plus it's summer vacation and they are around during the day more..I noticed I have to buy more in the summer time.

  2. OH my Tammie! My kids kids can eat tons! I can't imagine when they are all older. I only cook one box of Hamburger helper and that isn't enough but that's all they get.LOL Everyone gets one helping. We go through lots of milk, bread, cereal and if I make eggs it's dozen each time. A whole package of sausage. I am really thinking of getting a cow and some chickens. It's not fun!! My kids ate a whole package of Bologna the other day! YIKES!! Chips don't last long at all, a whole bag they can go through. I feel for you!! Hugs

  10. We are only three and I always feel like stuff is out as soon as I turn around. And interestingly enough it always seems to be breakfast type items.

  11. Good luck surviving the summer. Too bad it is too late for a garden.

  15. Ok, I remember being in a family of 5, and sometimes feeling like there's not enough food. But I've been doing Weight Watchers for 2.5 years now, and it really got me to learn about what I was eating and how much. So this is by NO MEANS implying anyone is overweight, ok, because I don't know youre family. But I was wondering...have you thought about reading the portion sizes on these food items and trying teaching the kids to adhering to them? Like, I think the portion for 1 bowl of cereal is 3/4 of a cup, and then 1/4 of a cup of milk with that. I know, sounds ridiculously small. I have trouble adhering to that one myself. But just reading the portion sizes is a real eye opener. Teaching the kids to follow that now could save them alot of trouble in later life. I bought a container of trail mix and right away measured out the 1/4 cup servinges into zip snack bags, so I'd know the proper serving size without having to think about it.

Another thing I learned is that our dinner plates are way too big. If you compare them to the size of dinner plates in dish sets from the 1940s, our plates are huge. So you could try using smaller plates at meals. That way you fill up the plate, it LOOKS like you've got alot, but you really have proper portion. I will admit, if I make pasta or chili in my house, my husband and I use the small bowls from my dish set, and I leave the pot of food on the kitchen counter. That makes us each have to get up and walk across the room to get more, rather than sitting and munching on more servings while we talk.

Getting people to eat slower and drink more water helps too. Gives the body time to realize it's getting food and getting full, before we eat too much.

I'm just offering these as suggestions. My coworker talks about her teenage son polishing off 2 large pepperoni pizzas by himself...and I've watched my 31 yr old cousin do the same...and they are both rail thin. I think it's excessive, and they can learn control. I say this, as someone who can polish off 2 ginormous plates full of spaghetti without blinking an eye. I think it's about training ourselves.

  16. Thank You N (Chalicat) ... I knowabout portioon sizes and will admit that I am notgood at all about sticking to it.

My hubby comes from a family where food is a major thing - everyone gathers where the food is. My kids aren't obese - but I know it could be better. I am afraid if I did that they would either laugh thier asses of at me or knock me over chewing anything that gets in thier way.

    LOL :o)
